Sebastien Zietz and Kieren Perrow claim victory in Round 3 at Vans World Cup of Surfing
Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz and Australia’s Kieren Perrow made the Round 4 (Round of 32) heats at the Vans World Cup of Surfing, second jewel on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, after claiming victory in their respective Round 3 (Round of 64) heats that went
down at Sunset Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, on Monday, December 3, 2012.
Australia’s Julian Wilson finished in second place during the first heat to accompany Zietz into the fourth round, whereas Hawaii’s Alex Smith and Ian Gentil rounded out the bottom-two positions, which resulted in their premature elimination from the competition.
The second heat saw Perrow walk away with the win, while South Arica’s Travis Logie took second place. Both the surfers consequently advanced to the next round. Australia’s Tom Whitaker and Brazil’s Jean da Silva finished in third and fourth place respectively,
thus getting ejected from the contention for the event title.
Conditions at the main event site continued to be as demanding as ever, with the size of waves making them look quite intimidating. The surfers, however, remained undaunted and showed a great deal of confidence while attempting to tame the wild conditions.
The opening heat of Round 3 pitted Zietz against Wilson, Smith and Gentil in a four-man battle for the Round 4 spot.
The local talent locked his first business-wave to post a 6.33 on the score-board and went on to back it up with an impressive 6.23-point ride, thus concluding the heat on a heat-total of 12.56 points. The score proved adequate to earn him the win.
Wilson made the Round 4 cut as well after finishing in second place with a heat-total of 11.33 points, which included an excellent 9.00-point ride, along with an ordinary 2.33-point wave.
Smith and Gentil finished with a heat-total of 10.90 and 9.73 points respectively, which just was not enough to keep them alive in the competition.
The second heat saw Perrow put on an impressive performance to get the better of his rivals.
The Australian surfer locked his first business-wave to unload a string of exquisite tricks, with the effort earning him a near-perfect score of 9.50. Backing it up with a 5.50-point ride, he finished with a heat-total of 15.00 points, which brought him
a convincing victory.
Logie was able to extend his life in the event as well after concluding the heat in second place with a heat-total of 13.74 points, which comprised of a 7.67 and 6.07-point wave.
Whitaker finished third with a heat-total of 13.34 points, while Da Silva had to settle for fourth place after registering a heat-total of 13.24 points. While the performances were nothing short of impressive, the scores just was not enough to take them
through into the next round.
