Sebastien Zietz and Kolohe Andino make the Round 4 cut at Reef Hawaiian Pro
Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz and America’s Kolohe Andino secured their place in the fourth round (Round of 32) at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, first of three events on the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, after claiming top honours in their
respective Round 3 (Round of 64) heats that went down at Haleiwa in Oahu, Hawaii, on Saturday, November 17, 2012.
Basque Country’s Aritz Aranburu finished behind Zietz in second place during the first heat to accompany the local surfer into the next round, whereas Australia’s Julian Wilson and Spain’s Gony Zubizarreta finished third and fourth respectively, which resulted
in their elimination from the competition.
While Andino took the win in the second heat, Hawaii’s Fredrick Patacchia finished just below him in second place to successfully extend his life in the event as well. Australia’s Kai Otton and Australia’s Mark Occhilupo rounded out the bottom-two positions,
which consequently removed them from the contention for the event title.
The $250,000 prize purse and coveted Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ranking offer on at the primary event site had the talented surfers from around the globe pushing hard during yet another day of the competition.
Squaring-off against Aranburu, Wilson and Zubizarreta during the opening heat of the round, Zietz put on an exquisite performance to walk away with the win.
The Hawaiian surfer acquired a 7.50 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 7.07-point ride, thus finishing with a winning heat-total of 14.57 points.
Aranburu made it through into the next round after finishing with a heat-total of 13.16 points, which included a 6.83 and 6.33 points.
Wilson and Zubizarreta finished with a heat-total of 12.63 and 12.30 points respectively, which resulted in their elimination from the contention for the heat-total.
The second heat saw Andino claim top honours, though just barely, after getting the better of Patacchia, Otton and Occhilupo.
The American surfer scored a 7.17 off his first business-wave and backed it up with a 6.43-point ride, thus finishing with a decisive heat-total of 13.60 points.
Patacchia made the Round 4 cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 13.53 points, which included a 6.80 and 6.73-point ride.
