Sebastien Zietz and Perth Standlick survive Round 4 at Quiksilver Saquarema Prime
Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz and Australia’s Perth Standlick successfully made their way into the fifth round (Round of 16) at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola after walking away with the win in their respective Round 4 (Round of 24) heats
at the point-break of Itauna Beach in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Thursday, May 24.
Brazil’s Simao Romao and Glenn Hall succumbed to their rivals in the first and second heat respectively, therefore having to step out of the contention for the event title.
The two-to-three foot waves on offer at the primary event site on day 3 of the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME event had been serving as an ideal stage for the surfers to put their stylish skills on display. Determined to keep themselves
in contention for a slice of the $US 250,000 prize purse and ASP ranking points, they were hardly holding anything back during their battles.
The first heat of Round 4 saw Zietz and Romao taking each other on in a man-on-man battle for a place in the fifth round. Both the surfers had failed to make a solid impact during their previous heat and thus found themselves against the wall facing a do-or-die
situation.
As the battle got underway, Romao put his local knowledge of the waves to use and got to a spot from where he was able to get hold of a solid 6.83-point ride in the opening minutes of the heat. The lead soon slipped out of his hands as Zietz locked a juicy
left-hander and pulled off a flurry of turns on it to post a 7.87 on the score-board.
The Hawaiian surfer soon collected an impressive 8.83-point ride to take his heat-total to 16.70 points, leaving his rival in need of a big score off his second business-wave. Romao failed to rise up to the task and finished 2.54 points behind Zietz after
adding a 7.33 to his account.
The next heat featured an impressive performance by Standlick as he got the better of Hall during their man-on-man bout to advance through into the fifth round.
The Australian surfer caught his business-wave in the opening minutes of the heat to post a 7.67 on the score-board and backed it up with another score in the seven-point range to finish with a heat-total of 15.44 points.
Hall collected a couple of sixes off his best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 12.90 points, thus conceding victory to Standlick while getting eliminated from the competition in the process.
