Sebastien Zietz barely clinches top honours in Round 4 of the ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro
Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz secured a spot in the fifth round (Round of 24) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro after barely getting his hands on the win in the second heat of Round 4 (Round of 48) that went down at Lower
Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Wednesday afternoon, May 2.
France’s Jeremy Flores was also successful in extending his life in the competition by securing second position in the heat to accompany Zietz into the next round.
With a prestigious title, huge prize purse and all-so-important ASP ranking points up for grabs, the latest ASP PRIME event attracted a huge field of surfers. These not only included the local talent, but also compelled a handful of well-known international
talent, including ASP World Tour contenders. The event had promised a heavy dose of enthralling action and that is exactly what was being delivered to the surfing fans. The clean two-to-four foot waves on offer enabled the surfers to go for the more technical
tricks lying in their arsenal, giving the surfing enthusiast to watch some of the sweetest moves live.
The second heat of Round 4 featured an intense battle for survival between Zietz, Flores, America’s Evan Geiselman and Spain’s Gony Zubizarreta. All four surfers were more than capable of stealing the show on their day, something that became quite apparent
once again with their performance and determination in their latest clash.
As the heat kicked-off, Zietz got busy with his search for a big score. Charging towards wave after wave, he carried out his hunt. The effort paid off as he eventually caught an 8.00-point wave halfway through the heat. There was still much work to be done
and thus he continued to lock waves to pull off his tricks. In the dying minutes of the battle, he found a 6.40-point wave which took his heat-total to 14.40 points.
Flores remained neck-to-neck with his Hawaiian rival, catching a number of waves to find an impactful wave-score. He posted a 6.83 on the score-board early in the heat and went on to add an additional 7.47 points to his account to get to a heat-total of
14.30 points. The 0.10-point deficit forced him to concede victory to Zietz while settling for second place himself. Both Zietz and Flores advanced into the next round.
Geiselman was yet surprise elimination of the competition. The American surfer had looked extremely comfortable in the waves on day 1, but the second day did not turn out to be the best for him. Scoring a 6.60 and 6.73 off his best-two waves, he finished
in third place with a heat-total of 13.33 points.
Zubizarreta stood in fourth place at the conclusion of the heat after scoring a heat-total of 11.40 points, which included a 5.83 and 5.57-point wave.
