Sebastien Zietz succumbs to Kai Otton in Quiksilver Saquarema Prime quarter-finals – Surfing news
Australia’s Kai Otton defeated Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz in the first Quarter-final of Quiksilver Saquarema Prime that went down at Itauna Beach in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday, May 27.
The comprehensive victory moved Otton into the next stage of the competition, the semi-finals, bringing him even closer to the coveted rewards that awaited the winner in the final stage.
Since the start of the fourth event on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME calendar, the fans got to witness a series of exquisite performances by some of the best surfing talent from around the globe. The opportunity to get their hands
on a winning prize of $US 40,000, along with up to 6,500 ASP ranking points was a strong enough motivation for the surfers to push themselves to the limit, determined to put on a couple of solid scores on the score-bard to keep themselves alive in contention
for the event title.
With the waves gracing the point-break of Itauna Beach lying in the three-to-five foot range, there were ample potent scoring opportunities available for the surfers to put their stylish skills on display, much to the delight of the huge crowd in attendance
at the event site.
The thrilling surfing action continued on day 5 with the first Quarter-final pitting Otton against Zietz in a man-on-man battle for the Semi-final spot.
As the heat got underway, Otton wasted very little time to put a decent score on the score-board. Getting in position to catch a juicy left-hander, the defending event champion unloaded a series of powerful turns to earn a 6.50 for the effort, consequently
moving into an early lead. He continued the momentum to eventually add another score in the six-point range to his account, thus reaching a heat-total of 12.77 points.
Zietz did not look too comfortable in the surfing conditions that were on offer. He opened his account with a modest 2.67-point ride and only managed to collect a 5.17 off his second business-wave, thus reaching a heat-total of 7.84 points. The lacklustre
effort did not pose a significant threat to Otton’s heat-total, thus allowing the latter to walk away with a convincing victory.
