does anyone know of any good secluded campsites in maine? we're going in early october, and we don't really want to be surrounded by the annoying leaf-peepers (we live in massachusetts, so we already know what fall foliage looks like). i was looking into acadia, but i'm worried that it will still be crowded then. willing to go inland and north! suggestions?

  1. Lake Umbagog in northern New Hampshire (the lake is on the border with Maine) has campsites accessible only by boat.  You can't get much more secluded than that.

Though not secluded Hermit Island in Maine (just south of Bath) has many rustic (no water.sewer or electrical hook-ups) sites so you don't get a lot of the typical "camping" crowd with their big fancy campers.  As a matter of fact only tents and pop-ups are allowed.

  2. Cobscook Bay State Park

Cobscook Bay State Park is ideal for the camper seeking solitude and beautiful scenery. The Park, surrounded on three sides by the salt waters of Cobscook Bay, has more than 100-well-spaced and secluded campsites. Many of these campsites are located at the water's edge and provide excellent vantage points to observe the ebb and flow of the tides. In fact, Cobscook is a Maliseet-Passamaquoddy word for boiling tides. The average tide is 24 feet with some running as high as 28 feet. At low tide adventuresome campers may dig for the delicious soft shell clam.

  3. I don't know the name of the campground, but it's in S. Arm, on the southern tip of Lake Richardson.  You can even camp on an island, where the only access is by canoe.

Gonna see some frosty mornings up there in October!  (I'm from MA too)
