Second-base remains a tough spot to compete for the St. Louis Cardinals players
The St. Louis Cardinals do not seem to have made their mind as to who will retain the second-base on permanent basis this year. On Sunday, April 01, the team manager Mike Matheny indicated that both Daniel Descalso and Tyler Greene are strong candidates
for it.
The two have performed extraordinarily to warrant their presence at the spot. Nonetheless, the World Series champions want their every move to be pondered hard and then decided. It is for this reason that the team manager says that there are a lot of things
that are going to go into the equation.
"I still don't see it black and white," Matheny said. "I still see that there are a lot of things that are going to go into the equation. They've both proven to us that they're capable. It's going to once again be putting in the information to see which
guy gives us the best chance in our mind that day."
What is interesting to observe here is that Greene will be a right-handed option for the Cardinals, while Descalso is a left-handed player. As for the infielders’ ability on the batting plate, both have performed with remarkable consistency in the season.
The Grapefruit League testifies to it. However, there are strong chances that Descalso will have the chance to get the first second-base on the Opening Day.
Mike Matheny keeps the sharp eyes on the every development. That is understandable given the stakes involved here.
"It's a big yard, I'll tell you that," Matheny said. "Getting the outfielders balls off the bat, giving the infielders balls off the bat is important. I think it's important every time you go to a new stadium.”
The St. Louis Cardinals will have their Opening Day against another well-built and fiercely competitive team the Milwaukee Brewers. The performance of the two players will play a key role in deciding the fate of the game.
How do the Cardinals render the Brewers unable in the game will be an interesting thing to watch. The team seems all ready to play the anticipated game against the Brewers with Descalso at the second base.
