My son started 2 grading reading at almost a 3rd grade level. Now before he went to school I started him on what sounds the letters make and the sounds they make together. My question is this is the first year that they are introducing phonics, What new phonic lessons are they going to teach him as all the kids in his class are strong readers. Thank you

  1. I personally think that just because a kiddo can read a word, it doesn't necessarily mean that he / she can spell it and carry it over into their writing.

Often reading is much higher than their writing/spelling abilities. Kids can still study words (we actually call the phonics, spelling, vocabulary stuff : WORD STUDY) and it is valuable. Kids need to recognize and manipulate words and spelling patterns to get it to stick.

I would think that it would be smart to shift your thinking and view phonics as part of word study.  Maybe the kids will look at endings, word families, prefixes suffixes etc... in 2nd grade.

  2. It depends on what program their using and the state standards. Don't worry about the other students in his class, just worry about how he's doing. I think it's great you're working with him early. If he brings home homework, you'll have a better idea of how to help him and if he isn't bringing home homework, but he is bringing home papers that have been graded look through those. If nothing comes home, call or email the teacher.

    Good luck!

  3. My guess is that they will expand into spelling rules associated with phonics.

  4. Phonics includes more than word sounds. So, once all the children have mastered sound/symbol relationship, the lessons will move toward mastering syllable breakdown, spelling and spelling challenges, prefixes, suffixes, root words and decoding word meanings. Then phonics moves into derivations and dictionary skills. After all this is covered, most curricula start blending phonics with grammar--by 3rd or 4th grade. Each  grade level "revists" phonics and if your child takes a foreign language, most foreign language courses also add a smattering of comparative phonics to help the student with pronounciation and foreign language reading and writing.

  5. Phonics is mostly taught in kindergarten and 1st grade. By 2nd grade, they should be reading words.

  6. they start at 1st grade and im still at 1st grade reading leevl though im in 2nd grade
