Second round: Lexi Thompson displays worse-than-expected performance at Hawaii
Lexi Thompson, who finished tied for 22nd in the Kraft Nabisco Championship, found herself in trouble at the LPGA Lotte Championship, as she stood tied for the 108th position at the end of the second round.
Thompson registered an unimpressive 75 on the first day of the $1.7 million tournament being played at Ko Olina Golf Club. She looked even more devastated in the second round, as she scored a 76, messing up her leaderboard position.
With the blustery weather conditions, the American teen kicked off the first round in a sloppy style. She registered 4 bogeys, one double bogey and just 3 birdies.
Thompson’s fans and spectators at the Ko Olina Golf Club, Hawaii, were surprised to see lesser-known players seize the top positions in the second round of the prestigious event.
She parred the first 3 holes in the opening rounds and went for a big attempt on the difficult par-3 4th, as she drained her first birdie.
She faced tough resistance on the course, which was compounded by strong winds whipping through the course.
Although pumped up due to a decent performance in the first major championship of the 2012 season, Thompson looked like she had lost hope.
A major setback the 17-year-old suffered was a double bogey on the par-4 18th. Analysts said that Thompson appeared to be out of form, as most of the strokes she played went off the target — something even the rising star admitted.
On the other hand, the round went even worse, as she recorded a 76. She scored 6 bogeys and just two birdies.
Thompson received plenty of appreciation when she performed better-than-anticipated in the Kraft Nabisco Championship a few days back.
Analysts said that the star still has two days to go, she can bounce back if she holds her nerve while facing tough contenders.
Sharing her thoughts after the major championship, the American star happily said that she prepares "the same for every tournament. I'm more excited about this event, though, because it is a major. And I love the golf course. Mission Hills is in great shape".
According to the second-round stats, Spanish Azahara Munoz and Ai Miyazato of Japan are standing tied for the first position, with 64 and 65, respectively.
