Second round of Deutsche Bank Championship: Highlights
The second day of the Deutsche Bank Championship, the second leg of the FedExCup Playoffs, turned out to be a day of heavy scoring where no fewer than three players, all of whom have won at least once in the season, grabbed a joint lead through the halfway
mark.
Adam Scott, winner of the World Golf Championship Bridgestone Invitational, led the day with his eye-popping eight-under, 63, at the par-71 TPC Boston.
The course, also known to be the easiest par-71 course on the tour, provided excellent playing conditions on Friday, September 3, and a good strength of players moved up the leaderboard with their fine performances. Scott is sharing the lead with Masters
champion Charl Schwartzel and long-hitting Bubba Watson, with an aggregate of 10-under, 132 each and will be heading into the third round of the championship with the final round scheduled on Monday.
Schwartzel opened up the front nine ripping his way through the field, pulling in a massive six birdies before making the turn. He carded four consecutive birdies on the opening holes to demonstrate his fine form. His back nine, however, turned out to be
less impressive where the sturdy South African dropped two shots to finish tied for the lead.
“I was, to say the least, fairly upset,” Schwartzel said. “It's sometimes very crucial to come back straightaway, otherwise your round can get away from you. The birdie on the first just got me going in the right mindset again.” Schwartzel also conceded
that his FedExCup bid has come out fairly well-balanced and hoped to capitalise on his early gains in the concluding rounds. Schwartzel has performed brilliantly throughout the season after his stellar victory at Augusta.
Scott, however, has a peculiar fondness for the TPC Boston where he won his first PGA Tour event at the TPC Boston eight years ago, and comes with bulk of experience about the course. With a recent win at World Golf Championship Bridgestone Invitational
and with one of the most experienced caddies, Steve Williams on his bag, Scott pulled in the finest rounds on the second day to push for the summit.
“I'm happy to put myself in the hunt because I need a good week to move up in this FedExCup,” said Scott, who is at Number 23 spot in the standings.
Watson remains the favourite for the moment and is utilising the local support to maintain his fine form in the event. The long-hitting American pulled in an impressive round of 64, which he later termed as ‘boring’, carding no fewer than six birdies and
a glorious eagle at par-five, and 7th to settle for a joint lead.
Top-70 players from the Deutsche Bank Championship will move to the third leg of the event, while the top-30 will play the Tour Championship in Atlanta for the hefty $10-million FedExCup Championship title.
