Second round of Tenerife ladies Match Play on the Ladies European Tour in progress
The second round of the exciting Tenerife Ladies Match Play on the Ladies European Tour is underway at the scenic Golf Las Americas and some of the rounds have already come to a conclusion.
Australian Frances Bondad defeated her country mate Karen Lunn after a tight 3 & 2, while the most thrilling match of the tournament turned out to be the Becky Brewerton and Laura Davies’ showdown which ended with Brewerton taking over Davies on first Extra
hole.
Davies had a tough first day on the course where she battered the tough Hannah Jun and defeated her with a 2 & 1.
“It was a close match. I was at the turn, 2 up, and I played really well but she kept making putts from just outside me and I had to make two really good halving putts for birdie. On 16 she three-putted and that pretty much handed me the game and we halved
17, but it was a very close game,” said Davies.
Lydia Hall of Wales knocked out Felicity Johnson of England with a 4 & 3 to move to the third round of the tournament. South African Lee Anne Pace defeated her country mate Stacey Lee Bergman with 1 up. While Rebecca Hudson of England also won her round
by taking over South African Morgana Robbertze with 3 & 2.
Danielle Montgomery also made it into the third round after defeating Spaniard Tania Elosegui with 3&2. Nikki Garrett thrashed Stacey Keating with a 5 & 4. Garrett had also knocked out Frenchwoman Virginie Lagoutte-Clement with a decisive 5 & 4 in the first
round.
The tour’s most celebrated player Trish Johnson, who was also the defending champion of the event, had to make an early exit from the tournament after her defeat by the rookie Stacey Keating in the first round. The young Australian defeated the veteran with
2 & 1 on the 17th.
The sponsors of the €120,000 event have come up with attractive prize cheques for the winner and runner-up, as well as a glittering Stingray 225CX Sport Boat X 260 worth €58,000 for an Ace on the 11th. Turismo deTenerife is the official sponsor for the event
and is supported by the Gobierno de Canarias, Real Federación Española de Golf and Federación Canaria de Golf.
The winner’s cheque is designated to be €40,000 and €20,000 for the runner-up. A total of 16 players qualified for the second round and eight successful players will proceed to the third round.
