Second round of the Pre-Qualifying School: Lewis, Vries and Gillen lead their groups
The second round of the LET Pre-Qualifying School at the La Manga Club in Murcia, Spain, concluded on Monday, with Amelia Lewis, Chrisje de Vries and Martina Gillen leading their respective groups.
The Qualifying School is typically played over two stages. In the first Pre-Qualifying stage, entrants are split into two groups, A and B.
All the players, however, display their game on both the North and South Courses available at the golf club. The only difference is the schedule of the rounds they play.
Group A has to play the courses in an order of North, South, North, South and Group B has the order of South, North, South, North.
American golfer, Amelia Lewis, is leading the Group A of the Pre-Qualifying School. She has a one-stroke lead over Valentine Derrey of France who shot a superb five-under par 67 in the first round, followed by a poor two-over par 74. Lewis managed a four-under
par 140 overall score.
Only five players from Group A managed to finish under par scores, including England’s Jodi Ewart with two-under and England’s Charlie Douglass and American Jennie Lee with one-under.
On the other hand, six players recorded under par scores in Group B of the tournament. Among them, Netherlands’s Chrisje de Vries and Ireland’s Martina Gillen were at four-under par 140 to share the lead after the second round.
Englishwoman Anna Scott finished an overall three-under 141 to take the second position on the leaderboard.
Sweden’s Sara Wikstrom, Hannah Burke of Mid Herts, and English amateur Kelly Tidy shared the third position with an overall one-under par 143.
There will be a total of four rounds in the Pre-Qualifying School scheduled from January 8-11. After the tournament concludes, it will be followed by the Final Qualifying School, consisting five rounds staring from January 15, 2012.
The Pre-Qualifying School features a 72-hole field. There will be 35 players from each group to qualify for the Final Qualifying School. It includes 90 holes due to the addition of an extra round.
