Second session of the 2011 Telstra Australian Swimming Championship: Day seven - Swimming News
Second session on day seven of the 2011 Telstra Australian Swimming Championship witnessed the dominating performance of Geoff Huegill in the Men’s 100m butterfly event. The winners of each event at the championship will qualify for the Australian swimming
team to compete at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
The session included the finals and semi-finals of the 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 50m breast-stroke, 200m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 50m backstroke and 800m freestyle in the Men’s and Women’s category.
The event started with the Women’s 50m butterfly final, where Marieke Guehrer earned the gold medal in 26.42 seconds ahead of the Southport’s Alice Mills and Melbourne’s Sophie Edington, who clocked in 26.43 and 26.76 seconds for the silver and bronze medal,
respectively.
Next was the Men’s 50m freestyle final, where Matthew Abood posted a magnificent swim in 22.02 seconds to defeat the 100m freestyle champion Matt Targett, who touched the wall in a time of 22.15 seconds. Ashley Callus followed them on the podium for the
bronze medal with a timing of 22.35 seconds.
In the Women’s 50m breast-stroke semi-final, Leiston Pickett emerged as the fastest qualifying swimmer in 30.67 seconds. She was followed by Natasha Waitzer and Leisel Jones, who qualified as the second and third fastest swimmer in a time of 31.13 and 31.22
seconds, respectively.
Moments later, Belinda Hocking improved the Australian record with her outstanding swim of 2:06.88 minutes and earned the gold medal in the Women’s 200m backstroke. Meagen Nay and Mikka Sheridan earned the silver and bronze medal behind Hocking, clocking
a time of 2:08.08 seconds and 2:09.82 seconds, respectively.
Next was the Men’s 100m butterfly final, where Australia’s great Geoff Huegill won the gold medal in 52.36 seconds ahead of the Sam Ashby and Joseph Carter, who touched the wall for second and third spot in 52.48 and 52.91 seconds, respectively.
In the Women’s 50m freestyle semi-final, Bronte Campbell over stepped the defending champion, Yolane Kukla, with a timing of 24.97 against Kukla’s 25.02 seconds. The third fastest qualification spot was secured by Olivia Halicek, who touched the wall in
25.98 seconds.
Next was the Men’s 50m backstroke semi-final, where Unattached’s Hayden Stoeckel demonstrated a quality swim to occupy the fastest qualification spot in a time of 25.59 seconds. He was followed by Ashley Delaney and Andrew Gillespie, who followed him into
the finals with timings of 25.93 and 25.98 seconds, respectively.
The last event of the day was the Women’s 800m freestyle final, where Katie Goldman earned the gold medal in 8:28.49 minutes ahead of Melissa Gorman and Blair Evans, who won the silver and bronze medal in 8:30.85 and 8:33.71 minutes, respectively.
The championship will continue for one more day and then the Australian head coach, Leigh Nugent, will announce the Australian Swimming Team for 2011 World Championships.
