Here we go

Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there was a singer named Jimena. She came from a poor family, but, gifted with uncanny beauty, far more radiant and desiderable than any noble maiden in the kingdom, and more than this with the most lovely singing voice in the entire kingdom, she rose quickly to fame.

She was called the "Songbird", as she could reach notes that no voice could ever afford, and sing so well to put her public in a sort of musical trance.

If Jimena was truly happy however it wasn't known: as the best singer in the whole kingdom, she had lots of money, that she readily used to build her old, still living, mother, a luxurious home with servants and commodities, like the ones in which princesses and queens resided. For herself, she took the biggest room, filled with musical sheets and stuff she needed to exercise. She wasn't really vain and spoiled, in fact she was kind and gentle... just, in time she devoted herself utterly to singing. She never left her home, if not for singing in public, she never let someone spend some time with her, even the handmaidens or a childhood friend, in fear of taking away too much time from her musical education. She ended living for music only, even her old mother now saw her just for meals, and their home was thickly filled of that lovely music of hers.

One fateful day however Jimena had a very rude awakening: she found herself unable to sing, not even to speak. She cried for hours, but no sound escaped her silent lips. She was more than simply mute now: for a casual observer, Jimena seemed like trapped in an invisible glass-jar. Her breath made no sound, stepping her toe on something contorted her face in a silent "ouch", and her lips clearly moved whenether she attempted to speak, with no avail.

Jimena was now rich, and called the best doctors in the kingdom to heal herself, sad and shattered as she felt, but after months of attempted therapies, and lots of money spent, she was bluntly told she would never get her voice back...

  1. Rhoda writhed in agony as the cold dead vampire hands held her down and caressed her tempting neck. Scenes from her life covered her eyes and she began to cry as she thought of all the things she had done wrong, all the people she had hurt ever since she lost that talent contest when she was only a small girl, and she thought about the gypsy woman's laugh as she said the words, "No turning back." And finally (and strangely she thought) she thought about her last meal. She had never really liked pasta and the thought of this was just too much for Rhoda. In an act of nothing more than desperation, her scream broke forth with an intensity that she was never able to muster when singing.

Lord Nolan's face contorted in horror and just as suddenly as he had appeared, he disappeared from the room and back into the locket leaving only the two songbirds and the room in disarray.

Jimena scathed, "What was that? That smell...What did you do?"

Rhoda, breathing heavily, hurried to the opposite corner of the room.

Just then Jimena's grieving mother walked into the room sobbing, only to find her deceased daughter advancing toward the horrified Rhoda. "Sob...It smells like garlic in he..." she was saying as the realization hit her. "Jimena," she screamed, "How, what....I saw you...you were...dead."

"She's a vampire," Rhoda screamed and quietly grabbed a large knife near her. "You have to kill her. Stake her heart now before she sucks your blood. She's evil!"

"Heh, Heh," Rhoda breathed again toward Jimena.

"Don't listen to her, mom," Jimena yelled and backed away. "She murdered me because she's jealous because she sings like a dead bird with a hoarse voice."

But it was too late, for Jimena's mom had caught a glimpse in horror of the fangs in Jimena's mouth.

Jimena's mother retreated in terror to the corner where Rhoda cowered with the still hidden knife...

  2. Jimena's  poor old mother was inconsolable as she watched them gently handling her daughters lifeless form, which strangely enough was even more beautiful  in death, the pale violet under glow of bloodlessness lending a stark contrast to her flowing strawberry blond hair.

As she cried tears of misery and remorse  she did not notice the new Ladie's  Maid hovering in the background and also watching the removal of  Jimena's body.

"They'll never figure out what really happened!!"

Rhonda  gloated to herself, thinking that the plan she had set in motion just a few short months ago was coming along nicely!

Unbeknownst to anyone in the house, Rhoda, was not who she appeared to be!

Prior to coming to work for Jimena, she had been a small time singer and entertainer, scraping out a measly but comfortable living, and enjoying the limited, yet  rewarding attentions she had been receiving. Unfortunately that had all ended when  Jimena came along, with her magical voice and intense beauty!

Rhoda had found that her services were no longer needed or wanted and the sometimes singer was out of work!

BUT...even worse than that,  was that every man in the kingdom was besotted with the fair Jimena, including Lord Nolan, who she had fancied had a crush on her until the vile "Songbird" had come along!!

So she had vowed to destroy the pompous beauty, first donning a mild disguise, then  applying for the Ladie's Maid position.

From there it had been more than easy to administer the potion that robbed Jimena of her lovely voice.

Rhoda  had purchased it from  a traveling gypsy who had stated, with a twinkle in her eye,  that it's effects were irreversible.

But that morning when she had  gone to Jimena's room, she was  aghast to find her  humming softly,  the musical sound causing her temper  to flare  with frustration!

In desperation she had administered an overdose of sleeping powder, then carried out the rest of her hastily made plan to make Jimena's death appear a suicide.

Rhoda eye's shone with wicked power as she watched Jimena's mother weeping softly.

As she thought about her next move her eye caught on a sparkling silver locket lying at the edge of Jimena's bed.

Strange but Rhoda had never noticed  her wearing it.

She picked it up and gazed at it. It was feather light but magnificently brilliant and had a tiny clasp which she attempted to open.......

  3. .. upon knowing thee of not being able to get her voice back, she wondered how miserable her life would be, without the voice that the whole of the kingdom has loved so much.

One night, alone in her room she had made a decision, that even the fallen angels would never agree, for she has decided to end it all, end everything, accept that this was her destiny.

She took a rope, and bid goodbye to world, the cruel world, that gave her everything and took everything back when she was at her highest, most.

The following day they found her body, hanging, cold, so cold.. no traces of her being happy at any given time...

  4. As Rhoda stood there fumbling with the clasp, seemingly from out of nowhere, a hand reached out and grabbed the locket away from her. Chills ran down Rhoda’s spine because she recognized the hand immediately. “Wasn’t it the hand of Jimena?” she thought to herself. “Hadn’t she seen it so many times before while working in her Lady in Waiting capacity?”

“AIEEEEEEEEE!!” Rhoda screamed as she dared to look at what must be an apparition! “You’re dead!” she cried. “Well, you would know all about that, wouldn’t you,” replied Jimena accusingly. “When I first lost my voice, I fell into a deep depression, and since no amount of money could bring it  back, I’ll admit I was considering taking my own life, but then I thought of the pain and suffering it would bring to my poor old mother and I just couldn’t do it.”

“Then providence stepped in, in the form of Lord Nolan,” Jimena continued. “Lord Nolan is possessed of many talents, including mind reading. Do you remember the night you served Lord Nolan and me tea and cakes out on the balcony? He read your every thought. Lord Nolan told me of your schemes, including the fact that you were the one behind the loss of my voice.”

“Have you anything to say in your defense?” asked Jimena of the terrified young woman standing before her. “NOOOoooo! I could…never…do...anything like that!” Rhoda cried convulsively, sobbing out the words. “So, you don’t know anything about an old traveling gypsy woman that sells poisons, potions and powders?” asked Jimena. Without waiting for an answer, Jimena said, “There is no point in lying to me. Now, I too can read minds.”

“Lord Nolan made me an offer I couldn’t refuse,” Jimena went on to say. “In exchange for my becoming his eternal bride, he would restore my voice and as a bonus, I would never lose my beauty, because I would never get any older.  Think of it, all we have to do is change our identities and appearance periodically, and we could travel the world forever. I could sing at all the most important opera houses, wear the finest clothes, and know the most important people throughout the ages.”

“Why are you telling me all this Jimena?” asked Rhoda fearfully. “I just thought you might like to know how you unwittingly played right into our hands,” answered Jimena. “I didn’t die from an overdose of sleeping powder. The reason my body appeared to have a pale violet underglow of bloodlessness was because Lord Nolan had completely drained my blood.  You made it appear that I had committed suicide. That way no one ever considered the truth--THAT I AM NOW A VAMPIRE!!”

“Of course, now that you know the truth, we shall have to kill you!” exclaimed Jimena gleefully. "Another of Lord Nolan’s talents is invisibility. He has been in the room with us all this time. Now, since there is no use in letting a perfectly good body of blood go to waste, we will share your sweet nectar." POOF!! Lord Nolan suddenly materialized. He and Jimena each grabbed hold of the struggling Rhoda and ……
