Question:

Second time student still exempt from some taxes? UK only?

I'll hopefully be studying for my second degree next year and will be 25 upon applying. I was wandering if second time students are exempt from paying the same taxes and council tax as when they were a first time student (I understand that the council tax issue depends on who you live with... student or non-student).

Thanks!

  1. Provided you are a full time student on a course that is more then 21 hours a week at a recognised  university, you will not have to pay council tax.

If you live with a partner of friend aged over 18, the other party will receive a 25% discount as they will be billed as the sole chargeable party.

If there are three or more of you at the property, you will be disregarded but the others will receive a full bill still.

Student status does not have an age limit or a time limit, you can continue to go on full time student courses for your whole life and continue to receive a disregard for council tax purposes.

Disregard is an odd term but in the council tax world, a full time student is considered disregarded, not exempt, though in effect it "exempts" you from paying council tax.

You must submit your student certificate the same as you did last time and they will re-bill.

  2. I think this is still the case, my boyfriend is doing a PHD and pays no tax, council tax etc and he is 26.
