  1. Just so you know, I read the book a few years ago, so I might be a bit rusty, but I loved the book and thought I'd give it a whack.

    1) Lily has perseverance, hope, love and moxie. She is also stubborn and refuses to give T. Ray the joy in punishing her by refusing to wail or scream. She is loved by Rosaleen and was loved by her mother and she thrives with this. She persevered and was able to overcome all the rough spots in her life to be able to surpass T. Ray. She also possesses an inner strength. This strength allowed her to finally rid herself of T. Ray and his abuse.

    2) May - Basket of sunshine. Emotional. Easily overcome. Warm. Lovable. Depressed.

August - Leader. Maternal. Independent. Strong-minded. Revolutionary. Loving. Warm. Caring. Accepting.

June - Resentful. Stubborn. Stoic. Caring - eventually. Not as accepting as other sisters. Eventually proved to be just as warm as other sisters but not until later in the novel.

    3) The Black Madonna shows all the women in the novel that there is an alternative way to live and shows a much more non-conformist way of thinking. Because this novel is set in a time of segregation, this proved to be unsettling to some and empowering to others. This results in stories of a higher power that is in fact in two minorities; she is both woman and black. This shows female and black empowerment. The Black Madonna changes Lily and Rosaleen's views on the world and on segregation. The Daughters of Mary gather around the Black Madonna in what is seen as a revolutionary practice. The Black Madonna joins these women and affects the way they see and interact with others.
