He told me that he needed secret clearance for his MO, i said no big deal right you go 7 years back and do the whole routine, etc. etc............

He told me that he had a possesion of marijuana charge in 2000

He had a paraphrenalia charge in 2005

He had a dwi in 2005

and has over $7,000 in debt,

He told me that they approved his clearance, is there any truth to this at all???????????

He told me that he was completely honest and forthcoming and they viewed and looked at that more than what was on paper.

Is he lying?

  1. I believe it, some people that got security clearances before my deployment to Iraq probably shouldn't have gotten them so quickly.

  2. Nope, he is being truthful. That is why he got the Clearance, and btw, Secret is not too difficult. Also, they don't just go back 7 years, that is standard for civilian checks... we go back as far as we need, and having a juvenile record expunged is irrelevant, it still shows up... what is important is HOW you deal with disclosure.

EDIT: A DWI, without jail time, does NOT preclude a Secret Clearance.

7K in debt does NOT preclude a Secret... 1K in BAD, undisclosed debt will. If the 7K is not Bad, as in his car payments are not in default (and other BAD DEBT), he would have no problem.

The Paraphenilia, and Possession charge COULD be an issue, but NOT if he disclosed it, had no related jail time (read- NO jail time, exceeding 1 year) and showed rehabilitation, other pertinent behavioral changes.

Simple answer, he is apparently being Truthful.

The college boy is NOT in MI, as is apparent by his recent search for 26xx MOS categories...

What really is important in a Security check is disclosure, and any changes in behaviour since the offense. We are not answering a question about SCI or SAP... but about a SECRET Clearance, and THAT is a huge difference.

Yes, we do know what we are discussing, well at least a few do.

Just about everybody has debt, and 7K is nothing... what would make it an issue is any amount, undisclosed, and in Collections... and even then, at the level asked about, it would be a debate.

BTW, would you prefer an answer from 2 AD Troops here who are in the MOS, or someone who recently asked-------"I already joined the Marines under Intel, i shipout in December. While in the Marines, i plan on working towards getting a Masters degree."

Good Luck in OCS, CB, you will be a typical 2ndLt.

  3. A clearance is partially about is this person a risk but it's also about are there things in this persons past that he is lying about that the enemy could try to use against us through extortion blackmail etc...

Also a Secret clearance really isn't that big a deal.  It's comprised of a several simple background checks.  And even if derogatory information turns up that the Soldier left out the commander can go to bat for the Soldier and still get the clearance.

This Marine officer sounds like a Lieutenant!!!  Speak from experience not college.  Like there's a class called "Army Security Clearances".

  4. Yes, he is lying. If what you say is true about him, he wouldnt stand a chance to get a sucessful clearance. He is lucky he was accepted into the military.. let me guess.... the AMRY!

He will never be able to qualify for a job of any importance that deals with vital information of any sort.

The people below me must not have a clue.....If you have debt, dwi charges, drug charges.....its hard enough getting in...  If he actually got a clearance...then all of those charges cant be true... it doesnt make sense...... Even if he was a juvenile when it all happened..... DWI... that one bugs me the most...

He might of, but it would have been hard, and a lot of waivers later...... If so, the National Guard is a lot worse then i thought.
