Question:

Secret phone tapping?!?

Hello, this is serious! Has anything like this every happened to anyone out there?

My mother-in-laws phone is somehow being tapped. It's very odd. Someone is obviously listening in. How do we know? We can hear them! While we talk, we hear mostly accidental-seeming sounds, like a dial being pressed (but not by us), or a grunt in the background, or a sigh, things like that.

HOW CREEPY!? She also said a few years back, she thought her phone line had been crossed with some kind of partyline, and it was very similar to this. It seems sort of voyeuristic. Someone, God knows who, is just listening in, and doesn't respond even though we can hear them.

Any experience in this department? Isn't this illegal? It should be.

Thanks.

  1. Several years ago my husband was listening to a portable

radio, I on the phone with my brother, Husband called to me

to listen, our voices were on the radio!   Many years before that, it was not unusual for telephone wires "to get crossed."

from then called party lines to private lines. and one would hear other voices etc.

I agree if your phone was bugged you would not know it.

Ham radio too years ago use to come up on TV channels.

  2. Thank You!

    Great Question.

    Wonderful Answers.

  3. once my phone was like that,. if i was real quiet and i told the other guy to be quiet i could hear... AZN NEWS. yes thats right it was just picking up tv signals or sumthing but it was a continous azn news thingy. so it might not be tapping. it must be a cordless phone

  4. If someone taps your phone line you will ~not~ know about it at all.

Nearly every exchange is digital these days, with digital comes an ability to stream data to as many points as one desires, none of these change the original data stream in any way.

What is probably happening is faulty wiring somewhere between the phone and the first exchange.

  5. 1-817-bug-rugs . if the oscillating tone stops, yer bugged. i guess it sends a tones and scans for c**p....i think it's legal (wiretapping)only with a warrant....but i'm sure p.i.'s do it anyway.

  6. Our town has a lot of problems with the phone lines. I tried to call Burger King one time. My son wanted to know what toy they were giving in the Kid's Meals. Anyway, I call and I hear this other man trying to make a phone call and he starts talking to me at the same time the Burger King lady answers. But the really bizarre part of it is that my sister said the conversation I had with the man and lady at Burger King was on her mother-in-laws answering machine! Isn't that trippy? We have had a lot of trouble with hearing other conversations. Maybe whoever's line is crossed with your mother-in-laws is just having fun listening in. Maybe it's some kids playing around. I hope it's not tapped. That would be creepy!

I have also picked up a Christian talk radio station on the line.

  7. exactly... your connection is picking up a bit of another connection and you are hearing somebody else's conversation... you can also pick up radio signals, tv signals, or hand-held walkies, etc.

  8. My neighbor one nite woke up and looked at her phone and it said in use, she picked it up and it was a guy on the other line talkin 2 someone. What happened was the phone lines wires connected somehow underground and that caused it. So just look into it, its probably the same situation.

  9. well sometimes the police listen in to your phones because something has happened like a suicide attempt.... but usually it is illegal for some others to do it... i am not sure but you should check it with the police...
