  1. Brush out the mane or tail before braiding

    wet the area before braiding

    the tighter, the prettier!

  2. Apply pomace to clean, slightly damp hair, braid neatly.  Lots of Aqua Net!  Rinse out mane and tail after removing braids.

  3. Use hair gel.

  4. Juliane- I used to use hair gel too! lol

  5. i wouldnt put any spray or "show sheen" on the mane.. as its really hard to braid when its slippery and really slick.

    Good luck

    =)

  6. First, make a cheap grooming tool belt by attaching a 2-3 quart-sized plastic freezer bags to a belt.  (Just cut  2 holes in the back of each bag and thread the belt through.)

Second, load your freezer bags with the following (2-3 items per bag in left to right order) a mane comb & brush, a small spritzer bottle filled with water and a big dollop of moisturizing hair gel, a braiding comb (the kind with the 3 prongs), medium-sized scissors, pre-cut yarn and rubber bands.

Obviously pull and trim the mane before you start -- preferably the day before.  So if I'm showing on Saturday, I pull and trim the mane Thursday and braid Friday.  Shorter sessions are easier to have your horse stand still for, and the fresh eyes a day later gives you a chance to fine-tune the mane pull/trim.

    To braid:

    1. Brush & comb out mane

    2. Starting at the head, use mane sectioning comb to section off mane and rubber band each section

    3. Start again at the head, snip off rubber band, spritz mane with water/gel mix, use section comb to section, place yarn over outside sections, braid, tie and move on to the next.

The "secrets" for me are the utility, belt which keeps everything handy, and the "water/gel mix" which keeps the mane wet and grippy and helps the braids come out nice and smooth.

    Good luck!

  7. I find braiding is easier if the hair is a little damp beforehand. Use an empty spray bottle filled with water. The hair is easier to handle and will stay together better and look tidier too.

    :)
