  1. Yes, you can get both.

SSI is administered by the Social Security Administration and is typically (but not always) provided to disabled individuals.

Section 8 is ultimately administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Although there are dollar maximum income limits for the Section 8 program, there is no restriction on the type of source of income an individual may have.  Therefore, you can certainly collect SSI and receive Section 8 assistance.

Your rent will be based on a up to 30% of your household income.  Let's assume that you receive $500 per month (gross) in SSI income and that this is your sole source of income:

    $500 x 12 = $6,000

Underthe federal Section 8 program, you'll receive a $400 elderly allowance if you are the head-of-household and disabled.  Therefore:

    $6,000 - $400= $5,600

    $5,600 x 0.3/12= $140 (TTP)

If there is a utility allowance, it will be deducated from the TTP.

  2. If you get it for disability you can also get section 8, the SSI is your income and 1/3 goes to rent.

If you are senior and collecting SSI you do not qualify for section 8.

  3. There might theoretically be some upper limit to the benefits you can collect at one time.  Generally, if you qualify for Section 8, you get it.   If the rent is $675,  HUD pays the landlord $600 and you pay the landlord $75.   If HUD pays and you don't , you get evicted even tho the landlord got most of his money.

  4. They are two different programs, so you probably can get both at the same time.
