  1. You need a job.  Section 8 is for low income people, not for people who want to sit around the house.

After you get a job, 1/3 of your pay and child support will go to rent, the tax payers pay the rest.

It may take 2-5 years before a voucher is available to you.

  2. Well, depends on where you are. Here where I am.. they give preference to people who work at least 20 hours a week.. I mean you can get it but they have a preference system.. being a single parent will help but getting you a job will help even more. Even if you only work 20 hours a week at min wage, by the time they take off your deductions, you probably are not going to owe any rent.  Depending on where you live, there may be a LONG waiting list even with a preference. In parts of CA, people have to wait as long as 20 years or so.. here where I live it's 6-8 months.. it just depends..Sometimes public housing is easier to get into but it depends on what your preference is (you choose where to live or they do).. I would apply as soon as possible but expect to wait

  3. section 8 pays a percentage of the rent based on your income, so I imagine you need a job or some source of income -( child support?) in order to qualify and then you have to find a place that has or can pass the section 8 inspection which requires a lot of things from the landlord

  4. For Section 8,  a house renting for $675:   the government will pay your landlord $600 and you must pay $75.  If the government pays and you don't , you will be evicted.  You don't have to have a job but they want you to be trying to get a job.  You apply at any Housing and Urban Development office (US government) in your city.

  5. You can always check with your local county housing agency, but be advised that most of those agencies have lengthy waiting lists of applicants.  Sec 8 funds are not unlimited, and the funds are granted based upon reaching the top of the list.

You MAY get some preference because of your situation, but there may well be others in the same scenario on the list before you got there.

  6. I believe you can however, there is usually a waiting list.  Having a 2 month old will certainly help.  Check with your local County.  Good luck.
