If I want to secure my Linksys wireless router network connection, do I have to do it on the computer that has the router or can I do it on the one that has the USB adapter?

Also, I am unable to connect to 192.168.1.1, does anyone know how I can connect to it?

  1. I've set up my router from different computers.  If I remember correctly I just pluged an ethernet cable with an rj45 at each end into the nic card of a computer and the first slot in the router, booted up the router, and ran the linksys cd.  When it asked about encryption I chose the 16 bit.

  2. First, there shouldn't be a problem with either doing the changes via the hard-wired computer or via the wireless computer....the only issue with which one to use would be with upgrading the firmware for the wireless router which should only be done with the hard-wired computer.  As for the problem with connecting with the router, the default should be 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 unless you changed the default IP address for the router through the setup in the past.  If you are still having problems, I would recommend resetting the router...there should be a small button either on the back or on the bottom of the router that you can press with a pen for approx. 3 seconds to restore to the factory settings....after that, i would try the 192.168.1.1 address and reset all security settings.....setup the security with at least WPA2 security by using a passphrase...

What router are you using....search their website for the manual if you don't have it!
