Security clearance??

I am a 42R in the Army national guard and now am transferring into active duty. I'm going to re-class as a 25M. Do I have to get another security clearance? If so, how much does the army consider bad debt?

  1. You won't need a new security clearance unless your new job requires an upgraded clearance than what you have now. (Secret to TS for example)  If you do need an upgrade alot depends on the clearance you need.  Really bad debt will affect a TS but not so much a secret clearance.

  2. The military gets their clearance data from one source, not just the Army. The Defense Security Service provides adjudication guidelines for each site requiring clearances for personnel. If you are going from a Secret to a Top Secret, they will have to do another SF-86 security package on you.

Depending on how bad your debt is will determine whether it is a mitigating circumstance, or you can have a waiver and continue to be cleared. You should bring this up with your admin office.

  3. Both good answers.

Depending on your assignment, a 25M only needs a secret- but a TS is still possible.

Your secret is only good for 10 years, so look to complete another investigation questionnaire (eQIP now) at the 9 year, six month point.
