Question:

Security issues with a public internet network?

So I was working today and somehow I ended up on a public security free network instead of my work's secure network. I was logged into my email, facebook, ebay, etc. What's the chance that I could have lost my personal data?

Thanks in advance!

  1. I wouldn't worry about Facebook or E-mail, chances are you didn't do anything there that anyone could care about...

If you did any purchases on eBay I'd just keep an eye on things for a while, if you weren't on for too long hopefully it was ok.

I'd at least change your eBay and PayPal passwords so someone couldn't log on (or bid) as you just in case they managed to get the password...if you're really concerned you could change your email and facebook passwords too but I wouldn't worry about them as much...

As for connecting in the future, go into you preferred networks list (it's in the connect to wireless networks window) and make sure the public network isn't a preferred network.  Also, make sure the "automatically connect to non-preferred" box is NOT checked.

  2. Public networks are scary.... they give anyone and everyone within range access to a hackers dream...read that link..below- this just happened this month with over 40 million credit cards stolen- from public networks,.
