Security tips for dorm accommodation & train travel.?

Question

I'm gonna be travelling around Europe by rail, stopping off in cities and towns, staying in youth hostels. What tips do you have in terms of keeping my luggage safe. I don't really want to be lugging my backpack while I sight-see, but don't wanna lose my stuff either!

Any suggestions appreciated!

Hi - Locks on all the Zips most of the hostels, stations have lockers that you can rent
