Sedated for oral surgery?

What can I expect from getting an IV sedation for my oral surgery? I have never been sedated before. I am kind of nervous and just would like some tips on what to expect. I am having 7 teeth removed in a few weeks.

  1. its not bad

they just stick the needle in and your out before you know anything else

you dont feel anything, and youll wake up kinda out of it so make sure you have somebody with you :]

  2. well..they stick an iv in your arm.  and you think "whatever. i can handle this..im not a wimp i can stay awake" and then you wake up realizing you had just been knocked out.

  3. Dont worry! First they just tie rubber band around your arm, then look for a vein.  They give you an IV and you're pretty much asleep in less than a minute. Also, generally you have an oxygen mask or tubes too.  It's a little uncomfortable getting the needle in, but you only feel it for about 30 seconds before you fall asleep.  I've had to have it, (had oral surgery just this morning actually) and i absolutely hate needles, but i survived! You'll be fine i promise :] Good luck!

  4. I had wisdon teeth removed in high school and they sedated me. I had an oral excisional biopsy last year and they didn't. I'll take the sedation any day!

They gave me the gas mask to relax me.

They put in an IV to put me under. (he had trouble hitting the vein and I could feel him "fishing" for it...but I didn't mind a bit because of the gas mask! BREATHE DEEP!)

It is common to become nausiated from the gas, so don't freak if that happens. If you do vomit, it will be awkward because your mouth will be numb, which will make you feel incredibly idiotic, but they are used to seeing it so just try to stay calm.

My advice; go to the surgery in something you are comfortable sleeping in (t-shirt and boxers or something similar), have your driver stop and get the Rx on the way home so you can take the ones that knock you out ASAP, go home and straight to your pillow (which you should already have covered by a towel in case of bloody drooling during sleep) and sleep through the pain.

Have plenty of liquid foods in the pantry; sweet, salty, cheesy, whatever. It will all taste like pennies for a day or two anyway.

  5. They might ask you a question, while your answering it you'll fall asleep, sometimes even counting and badaboom your speech will get slower and slower and zzzzzzzzz your asleep, and that's it you wake up not remebering anything. So don't be nervous, its going to be ok!
