Sedation Dentistry, Help please!! I'm terrified!?

I'm 21 years old. Yesterday I went to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned for the first time in years. The dentist says I need to get 8 fillings and have all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled becuase they are causing problems. (Bad teeth run in my family) I'm not scared of the dentist at all. I mean when I was a kid I was in and out of the dentists chair like once or twice a month for all sorts of reasons. My dentist told me one of my wisdom teeth have to be surgically removed due to it's location and the way that it is positioned.

He recomended that when I come in to remove that tooth since he will have to put me under with an IV that he do all the fillings and remove the other teeth. I siad sure why not let's get this done all in one go. When I called my mother and told her this she tells me that you can die if you get too much dental work done in one go.

I'm now terrified... I've never even had laughing gas before! Has anyone had this procedure? What happens? what are the risks?

  1. I had my wisdom teeth surgically removed. It's no big deal. The laughing gas effects everyone a little differently. They gave it to me and I laid there wondering if it was turned on or not. Then all of a sudden I felt like I couldn't breath. It was a little scarey, but when the nurse asked me how I was doing I told her I liked it. I had been laying there quite some time waiting for the doctor.

Personally, I'd prefer to skip the gas if I had to do it again. They only give it to you until they put the IV in. I'd rather feel a little poke of the IV than have the gas. However, it's not like it's some horrible thing.

After the IV is in, you'll be asleep in seconds and be waking up when it's all over. You wont feel a thing and the meds they give you going home are pretty strong. I took them and went to work two hours after the surgery (wouldn't recommend that though).

  2. my daughter was scheduled to do a lot of dental work while under anesthesia.. but i declined.. i prefered her to be awake and break the dental work down to separate office visits.  there are so many horror stories of people going under anesthesia for dental work and not waking up.. dont risk it.. u've been in and out the dentist all your life so a few extra visits wont make a difference.. as for the wisdom tooth that is in a bad position u can  be put to sleep so they can pull that wisdom tooth out.. go see an oral surgeon.. good luck

  3. Your mother is wrong, sorry but true, Don't be terrified, all the stories you hear about dentistry gone wrong are far and few between and as long as your not seeing some seedy dentist down some allyway you should be fine.  Don't worry this is a specialty called sedation dentistry that they have to be specially trained for, they take it serious to make sure your safe.

  4. there are really no risks but if u are concerned ask him

  5. i had the gas and the IV for my wisdom teeth. it wasn't bad at all. i had doctors and nurses all around me at all times and they monitor you to make sure you're fine! you have to come fully to before they release you so don't worry. it's way easier then going through all that awake.

don't let your mom scare you, you cannot die from too much dental work.

    best wishes
