Question

If you had a 3 gallon and a 5 gallon jug. And you need exactly 4 gallons of water. You have all the water you need but can't use any thing else.

How would you get the 4 gallons exactly?

Explain your reasons fully.

Fill the 5 gal and then fill up the 3 gal from the 5 gal.  This will leave 2 gal.'s in the 5 gal jug.  empty the 3 gal and re-fill with the two gal.'s from the 5 gal jug.  Re-fill the 5 gal to the top and fill in the rest of the 3 gal from those 5 gal.'s.  This will leave exactly four gal.'s in the 5 gal jug.

I would fill the 3 gallon jug, then dump it in the 5 gallon jug, so I have exactly 3 gallons, then fill the 3 gallon jug one third of the way, and add that to the 5 gallon jug, so I should have about 4 gallons.

Or, I would go to a grocery store, talk to a manager, and kindly offer him both jugs for a 4 gallon jug.

i would put the 3 gallons in the 5 gallon jug and that makes 8 gallons and drink half of it

I would fill both jugs to the brim and drink 1 gallon of it from the 3 gallon jug. Then fill the 3 gallon jug up again and i should have 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug after being sick.

1. Fill the three gallon jug completely.

2. Empty it into the 5 gallon jug. You have 2 gallons of empty space left in the 5.

3. Fill the 3 gallon jug again.

4. Pour 2 gallons into the 5 gallon jug. You have 1 gallon of water left in the 3 gallon jug.

5. Dump out the 5 gallon jug.

6. Pour the extra one gallon from the 3 gallon jug into the five gallon jug.

7. Fill the 3 gallon jug and pour it into the 5 gallon jug. This makes a total of 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.
