the age of enlightenment came about though not thru a specific date and time but a gradual process throughout the yrs.  its owing to the forces of society, the progress or happenings or social conditions that led to humanity to seek out solutions and to progress.  this is the human spirit.  hence it can be traced back to as early as time was during greco-roman times.  then we see how certain individuals stifle the human spirit.  how christianity achieved / reached its glory and went down when power and ego dominated the papacy / clergy.  how women were blamed for everything that went wrong -how joan of arc was destroyed by the clergy. so such developments led to new thinking and mental models.  without such happenings humanity maybe at a standstill.  the human spirit lives on and we will continue to move to the goal of an ever-advancing civilization
