Seeded Diego Junqueira defeats Nikola Ciric in 2nd round – Palermo Challenger 2011
Serbian, Nikola Ciric, was ready to face a tough battle against Diego Junqueira for the place in the quarter-finals of ATP Challenger Tour on October 5th in Palermo, Italy. Junqueira comprehensively defeated Nikola in
straight sets with a cumulative score of 6-2, 6-2. He is the first one to proceed to the quarter-final of ATP Challenger Tournament.
The match started in a typical manner with Junqueira dominating the entire show. Nikola did manage to squeeze through one ace but that was just a mere consolation for him. Junqueira had a terrific 89% first serve point winning
ratio and won three out allotted four break points. Nikola just managed to earn a single break point and could scramble through with a couple of game wins before Junqueira pocketed the set with a cumulative score of 6-2.
The second set was an exact mirror image of the first set with a same score line to follow. Junqueira continued his domination over Nikola who was just a mere spectator throughout the match. Junqueira sealed the victory in straight
sets. Nikola played the second set in complete desolation. Nikola was no way near the class of his competitor who ruled in every department with his prolific display of all kinds of shots across the court.
Nikola’s confidence was shattered that he couldn’t manage to win a single breaking point in the second set and was perhaps just playing for the sake of completing the match. He showed no intentions to break the tempo of the match
and was tamed throughout the second set by Junqueira.
It was supposed to be a one-sided contest and that’s what it turned out to be in the end. Nikola did well to reach the main round and was looking promising before he was knocked-out by the seeded star Junqueira. Junqueira will
now face the winner of the match between Yuri Schukin of Kazakhstan and Frederico Gil of Portugal to contest for a spot in the quarter-finals of the ATP Challenger Tournament.
