Seeds fall at the Topshelf Open in s-Hertogenbosch – Tennis News
Third seed John Isner, Sixth seed Marcos Baghdatis, seventh seed Victor Hanescu and eighth seed Daniel Gimeno-Traver all fell in the opening round at the Topshelf Open 2013 on Monday.
It was a drastic day for all seeds in action on Monday at s-Hertogenbosch.
The former Top 10 Isner made a convincing start and managed to pull out the opener with a 7-6(3) win. However, he lost his track afterwards and eventually suffered a 7-6(3), 3-6, 4-6 loss at the hands of the world number 73, Evgeny
Donskoy.
The world number 21, Isner lost his opening serve in the second set and failed to recover after that. In the deciding set, the American suffered the blow in the seventh game and subsequently exited from the tournament.
Ranked 40th in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Baghdatis followed footsteps of Isner and exited from the opening round. He stepped off steam after keeping his second serve and eventually lost the opener
with a 2-6 score line against Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq.
The former world number eight, Baghdatis, failed to re-gain his strength in the following set. He gifted away his serve in the third game and eventually recorded a 4-6 loss.
The Cypriot commented in a post match presser, “I’m going through tough times. Confidence-wise, head-wise, everything’s spinning when I’m on the court. I’m thinking very negatively on the court. It was a terrible match, I didn't
even play the match until second rain delay. Then I started fighting a bit more, but he played also okay.  Today was a terrible day. In practice I’m playing so good and I want to do everything perfect on the court. I am putting too much pressure on myself.
I need to fight and win some matches and just focus on that, not trying to play perfectly all the time.”
Hanescu managed to snatch his break back in the seventh game and levelled the scores at 4-4 in the opening set. However, he lost his serve again and endured a 4-6 defeat.
The Romanian seed lost his opening serve in the proceeding set. He held his remaining serves with poise. However, the initial blow caused him to suffer a 3-6 loss.
Gimeno-Traver made a strong entry at this grass court tournament and drew the first blood in the fourth game to take a 4-1 lead. However, he lost his edge in the ninth game and trailed in the tie-breaker to suffer a 6-7(4) loss
against Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov.
In the second set, the eighth seed suffered the first blow in the sixth game. He held his remaining serves but ultimately bowed out to the Russian with a 3-6 defeat.
