Question:

Seeds or buy small plants, for veg patch?

Hi,

I want veg for christmas dinner, is it too late to sow? or should I buy baby veg plants and plant them in my veg patch?

I live in the UK

And I was thinking:

Carrots

Broccli

Coliflour

Sweed

  1. If you are REALLY quick you can sow most of these now and have some results for Christmas.

    Carrots; use Early Santes

    Broccoli; go instead for a substitute, Broccoli Di Cima Rapa which gives stems just like sprouting broccoli

    Cauliflower; not too sure as I don't grow this veg.

    Swede; I think you may be too late for this, try baby turnip instead.

    You could also plant a couple of buckets with potatoes in compost and you should get new potatoes by then, delicious.

    For advice on others try getting this month's Grow Your Own magazine and/or Kitchen Garden, they are both excellent.


  2. root veggies are best from seed eg carrot

    try growing them in pots doors as frost and snow might kill them

  3. you can probably still get away with baby carrots, but the other items are a bit late, plug plants of the other things have been in the ground for about 2 months now.
