My dog had fleas and last week i took her to the vet where i was given frontline for her and my cat, worming tablets, flea comb and a £20 bottle of flea spray for the house. I treated the animals as advised and literally ripped my house apart and cleaned EVERYTHING! A week has gone by and I and the dog have not had any fleas, yet this morning when i used the comb i found one. I had been combing her for about 10 minutes before i found the flea. it jumped off and got lost in my house. i sprayed the area again just now. is this just because there are eggs which are hatching, and will it die? i am to frontline the pets and do the house again in a month, but now im wondering if i should buy another tin and do the house again just now?

As I said, this is the first one i have seen in a week, and i have not been bitten either, if i ontinue the treatment in a month and keep washing her bedding etc, how long am i expected still to find the odd one? the vet said around 6 weeks, but i dont understand how that flea that was on her hadn't died yet.

please help, i am going out of my mind!!

Thanks x

  1. i use Sulfodene Medicated Shampoo its like $10 and it kills fleas right away when you bath them and if there are any left on the dog it kills them to it just take a couple minute but it works for my dogs i don't know what would help you with the house but here is a link if you interesting in that shampoo...http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js...  good luck with the flea problems

  2. you could try giving program it cuts the life cycle of the flea stopping eggs from hatching. also has she been to a park or training classes where there are other dogs that could have passed one on to her. if that is the case i wouldn't worry too much but i wouldn't spray the house right now if u only did it a week ago.

hope you can get rid of them!!! :) best of luck

  3. If you're using Frontline, the fleas you will find are sterile and will die once their time is up - the fleas are all poisoned.  What few you have left are on death's door.

Keep up the regime of  frontline at the scheduled time, I would also treat the yard (if applicable) with an insecticide specifically listing fleas on the label.

  4. See...you did well going straight to the vet...I fannied around for ages buying sprays from Tesco, which did absolutely nothing and I got bitten to death !! If I were you, I'd go back and get another canister of the house spray...costs you but well worth it cos it does get rid of them. Keep checking the dog...but don't nuke it again until the month is up...Good luck !!

  5. I have owned and trained dogs (mainly German shapherds), for around thirty years. In order to combat fleas you need to stick to a routine of grooming and , occasionally bathing. Fleas do not like water it kills them very quickly, especially warm water. You don't mention the breed of dog you have, long or short coated etc. I honestly have never suffered from a flea ridden dog. Grooming should be done with a stiff brush, and commenced at the tip of the tail, brushing against the the flow of the coat, brushing always towards the head over the entire body, not forgetting the feet and legs. On reaching the head, brush the opposite way until you reach the tip of the tail. This is most conveniently done with the dog perching with it's front paws on some sort of stand, such as a log on end about two feet high. Daily grooming like this will keep the fleas at bay, and the eggs, but will also give the dog a beautiful coat.

  6. The frontline should stop the breeding so keep up the hoovering all those little nooks & crannies as the little beasties like to hide themselves away

    Keep up with the grooming.
