Question:

Seeking Employment in Australia as a U.S. citizen

I will be graduating college this fall and am seeking a career in market research for children's products. I was wondering if you knew of any good companies in Australia that specialize in children's products or have good entry level marketing positions for recent grads.

Also, I had planned to go to school in Perth, but what cities have the best commerce? Also, any tips for a single mother seeking a new life in Australia?

  1. You're putting the cart before the horse if you haven't already looked into getting a work visa as work visas are restricted to people in occupations in which workers are in short supply in Australia.

The occupations required are listed on the Skilled Occupations List (SOL) and yours must be on there for you to have a chance of getting a visa. Marketing Specialist is listed, but receives only 50 points for the points test which applicants must pass, though there may be a 60 point occupation for which you're also qualified. You will probably need a 60 point occupation or sponsorship to pass the points test for a non-regional visa.

Following is the SOL and also links to information about qualifications required/skills recognition and the points test:

You will also need to meet health and character requirements. For all information apart from the above, go to http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/index.htm

Skilled work visa applications normally take around 12 months to be granted and you will have a better chance of finding work once your visa application is well underway.

The best cities for commerce are Sydney and Melbourne, though Brisbane isn't too far behind and is developing very rapidly. Perth is a nice city to live in, but is smaller than the eastern seaboard cities and is very isolated over on the west coast.

If you can get permanent residency and a suitable job, life in Australia for a single mother seeking a new life has a lot going for it. People are very friendly and helpful and you won't have any difficulty settling in and making friends. Also, you will get very good government benefits ranging from universal healthcare through subsidised childcare, free secondary and primary education for your family and heavily subsidised tertiary education for yourself and your family when the time comes.
