Do lots and lots of research.

You ask a very general question, there are tons of agencies out there, some are right for some people, others are not.  It all depends what you are looking for in your adoption experience.

As with anything, there are good ones out there and there are bad ones.  I highly recommend doing as much research as you can.  

We used Adoptions from the Heart on the East Coast and had a wonderful experience with them.  But I have also read some people on Y!A who have had negative experiences with their offices.  

I wish I could be of more assistance.  Research as much as you can - knowledge is the best resource you have.

It depends on what you are looking for.  A good place to start is your local children's services office (the folks who handle foster care in your area)  You can also check out adoptUSkids.org for more info.

No there are not many good adoption agencies out there.  They are rife with unethical practices and corruption.

I can only think of one that could be described as 'good'

Adopting via social services is the best option.  These kids genuinely need a home and generally treated less like commodities than the lil babes caught in the free-enterprise of adoption 'agencies' and 'facilitators' ick

The operative word is social services - a service to find homes for children.

Agencies who charge big bucks are in the business of finding babes for paying customers and you would not believe some of the things that they get away with.  Steer clear.

Call your local DCF(department of children & families.) My hubby & I adopted from foster care  & he is our WORLD! There is normally no charge. Our son has Medicade & a 4 year scholarship to any college in our state. Adopting children this way has several benefits, but mostly you are giving a child a home who has been neglected, or abandond. FYI...we got our son at 5 days old. Good luck! ;-)

Join the yahoo groups "2adopt" and "adoption scams". These have been very important resorces for me. Learn how to protect yourself and recognize scammers and find ethical agencies. This is where the research starts. It is a group for and by adoptive parents.  On here (yahoo Answers) you will likely just get a bunch of snarky comments on what an awfull thing adoption is. yes there are several reputable agencies. take a look in your local telephone book and give a call and set up a meeting with them to determine if you are comfortable with them.
