That is, in a good way as the Double Fine studios want gamers to go through a range of emotions ranging from surprise to disappointment to ecstasy during their playthrough.
Double Fine studios is working on a new title, The Cave and will revolve around three adventures who stumble onto a cave where, well, where there’s a lot going on that shouldn’t be going on, or as Sega put it, “Your first clue that The Cave is a place like no other will come just after you assemble your team of three unlikely adventurers – each with their own unique personalities and skills – and stumble across a subterranean amusement park and a medieval castle.”
Sega went one step further in the 'wha-' department when the description concluded, “not to mention a fully armed and ready to launch nuclear-tipped ICBM.”
As intriguing as the idea did sound, the publisher’s description of the emotional roller-coaster that the game was going to be was just as surprising as the plot.
“If you enjoy rappelling, spelunking and dark rocky caverns then be prepared to be disappointed! And then intrigued. And the AMAZED. And then disappointed again, but only for a minute.”
At this point in time gamers will have to be slightly confused as to how a game with such an ‘under the surface of the Earth’ plot and aimed at casual gamers will be taken on such a ride but Sega were insistent on the fact that the game was set to have gamers go from feeling relieved to bewildered to satisfied by the end of the game.
The game is set to be released on PCs sometime next year, in 2013. There is a catch and similar to an increasing number of games in the genre, The Cave will be a digital download only.
The plot does sound intriguing and it will be interesting to see if the game can live up to the promise of delivering the range of emotions that Sega has promised. However, it seems that only time will tell whether The Cave is a game to remember or whether it will be a game to forget.
