Seimone Augustus shines as Minnesota Lynx down Atlanta Dream 96-85 - WNBA Recap
Seimone Augustus had a team-high 25 points, scoring 15 of them in the second half, and grabbed five rebounds as Minnesota Lynx beat Atlanta Dream 96-85 on Friday night at the Target Center. With this win, Minnesota improved their
record to 4-1 in this season, winning their four straight games after a defeat in the first game of the season.
Rebekkah Brunson also played well and registered her fifth consecutive double-double of this season. Brunson ended with 18 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the field and 6-for-8 from free throw line, and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Lindsay Whalen contributed 16 points on an impressive 7-for-9 shooting and eight assists for Lynx, who got 13 points from Maya Moore.
Angel McCoughtry, playing her second game after a return from injury totalled a game best 27 points, snatched eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists for Dream. Erika de Souza punctuated 18 points and 11 rebounds while Iziane
Castro Marques added 12 points. Shalee Lehning came off the bench with 11 points for the Eastern Conference champions, who won their only game of the season against the New York Liberty on Tuesday night.
First Quarter
Minnesota opened the first quarter on a 4-0 run but Atlanta scored the next six points on a trot to go ahead by 6-4 at the midway mark. Moore nailed a jumper on the next Lynx possession to make it even but Atlanta sprinted to 9-3
run capped by a Castro Marques’s running jump shot to snatch a 15-9 lead.
Augustus then scored the next six points for Lynx to cut the deficit to two, 17-15, with 02:02 remaining. Irvin’s jumper on the next possession made it 19-15 for the Dream but a pair of free throw by Wright once again brought the
deficit to two. Price’s free throw in the closing seconds of the quarter put Atlanta ahead by 20-17, heading into the second frame.
Second Quarter
The Lynx were the better team in the second quarter and limited Atlanta to just 19 points, tying the game at 39at halftime.
Third Quarter
Minnesota romped to a 13-0 run early in the second half to break the game. Lynx outscored the stunned Dream 28-16 in the third and took a 67-55 advantage into the final stanza.
Fourth Quarter
Leading by 12 points after three quarters, Minnesota maintained their lead in the fourth quarter at the back of the Augustus’ 11-point spurt. Dream tried to get back into the game midway through the frame but every time they came
close, Minnesota responded with a counter punch and walked away with the win.
