Question:

Seizure control imperative!! How can I get my internal medicine doctor to call me back today??

I'm a CNA- scheduled for graveyard shift this month. I am having big trouble maintaining seizure control, due to there being a necessary lapse in medication schedule. Auras begin to hit as I get off my first night of work, and keep going for a good week (as 6 days later, I have to switch back to taking my phenobarbital at night). I've tried just taking the phenobarbital in the mornings, but within a couple of hours, I can't keep my eyes open! So, I go back to taking it at night. Basically, every week going from nights to days (or vice-versa). This has created absolute havoc in my life!

I agreed to work my week (almost 2 weeks ago) but let them know I needed to get back to evenings asap due to my breakthrough seizures. The D.O.N. agreed it was necessary to take me off asap. But I go back Friday to work 6 more nights despite (and of course, she's off until Monday).

I called my IM doctor twice today, and left messages for her to call back asap. Haven't heard back yet. I'm freaking out, because I feel very unsafe with these strong auras hitting frequently. What else can (or should) I do?

Thanks for your help!

  1. You poor thing!  You can't help that you have seizures.

Being a CNA is a responsible position.  If I were you (and this is really hard if you need the money), but I would ring in with a "medical problem".  If you said you were "sick", it could open you up to individual interpretation of what does and does not constitute sickness.  If you say "medical problem", you would be absolutely within your right.  You would have medical records that document your history of seizures and, if your workplace wants to make an issue of it, you can fall back on those.

You have tried everything to get onto your doctor so don't stress and let work know part of your situation (you don't have to divulge it all).

Take care and look after yourself. =)

  2. my daughter had seizures, until she went to a doctor in oklahoma. he gave her at first depakote and then later topamax. topamax is working so far, just makes you hyper and you loose weight. i never heard of someone taking phenobarbital. i think you should try topamax.

    phenobarbs i heard are addictive.

i would also get yourself checked in the E.R . find a doctor who will return your calls. get off the phenobarbs.
