Selangor Open ends with few questions for the BAM’s scheduling committee – Badminton news
The Selangor Open ended on Sunday but left few questions for the scheduling committee of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
The Association has indicated in past to design a friendly schedule of national events to give relaxation to its international shuttlers but the players were subjected to this contest right after the Thomas Cup preliminaries and just before the series of
European badminton events like German Open, All England Championships and the Swiss Open.
The schedule of Selangor Open forced top Malaysian shuttlers to participate unwillingly and the absence of World Number 43 Daren Liew, the World Number 50 Arif Abdul Latif and the prime doubles team Goh V Shem-Teo Kok Siang in the semi-finals made the last
round unattractive.
The World Number One Lee Chong Wei also did not grace the singles event with his presence, which turned this event bit boring, and participated only in the mix doubles event.
Some critics have the view that BAM should have been delayed this national event to give the players a chance to focus on the more important events as they are striving to earn world ranking points before the Olympics qualification period ends in May.
The top Malaysian duo V Shem-Kok Siang quit the event citing injury but it did not put their training sessions to halt, similarly the prime Malaysian singles shuttlers Daren Liew and Arif Abdul Latif lost in early stages and managed to have a break before
the series of European tourneys.
This clearly shows that the players took this home event lightly and chose to have some rest by losing in the early stages. That really damaged the value of Selangor Open.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia could have preserved the significance of this event by delaying it and choosing an appropriate date later. The players could have put a better show by taking this event more seriously then.
This event subjected few players to contest in the five tournaments in a row as some of them were participating in Selangor Open after the exhausting Thomas Cup preliminaries and they are scheduled to exhibit their prime skills in the German Open, All England
Championships and the Swiss Open also.
