Selcuk Aydin to take on returning Robert Guerrero for interim WBC welterweight title – Boxing News
Selcuk Aydin, the former WBC Silver welterweight champion, will take on most probably the toughest opponent of his career Robert Guerrero, the former WBA World and WBO lightweight champion, in a 12-round bout in order to grab the interim WBC welterweight
title.
The duo will headline the pay-per-view on July 28, 2012 which is being organised and promoted by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions. The rest of the fight card is still under consideration and more bouts will be added with the passage of time.
Aydin recently shocked the boxing world by verbally bashing Robert vehemently. Selcuk, who boasts a flawless professional career, was of the view that Guerrero should go back to the light or featherweight division and should not try to disturb the big guys
in the welterweight class.
The Turkish pugilist was of the view that though Robert is a three-time world champion yet he does not know what he will face in the ring on July 28 in fact he cannot imagine what he is bringing up against him in the ring.
Aydin, 28, is widely known as Mini-Tyson and claims like above, from such a brawler, should be taken seriously especially when the speaker possesses an intimidating resume.
The former EBU (European) and WBC international welterweight champion, Aydin has been in a total 23 bouts and emerged victorious in all. The surging welterweight has collected 17 of his wins by knocking the opponent out cold.
During the media session, Aydin stated, “I give props to Robert Guerrero for accepting to fight me. He is a three-division world champion and very obviously an excellent boxer. But he has just no idea what’s coming for him. He has never been in the ring
with anybody as determined, powerful and heavy-handed as me.”
While bashing Robert’s dream of taking on names like Floyd Mayweather or Juan Manuel Marquez, Aydin remarked that he should keep on dreaming such absurd thoughts adding that he will even aid him by sending him to sleep for a pretty long time during the bout.
Selcuk warned Guerrero and stated, “I respect Guerrero for all he has done and achieved so far but his way ends on July 28th in San Jose. I suggest he goes back to light- or featherweight and leaves the big guys to someone who can actually handle them.”
Whether Aydin fulfils his claims or not that is not the point to ponder. The problem for the Turkish proud is that Robert is not a simple, rookie level pugilist who can be nailed easily or obliterated in the initial rounds.
Guerrero, also known as ‘The Ghost’, boasts 29 wins in a total 33 bouts and has nailed18 of his opponents by sheer knockout. He has been a three-time three-divisional world champion and therefore cannot be underestimated at all.
