Question:

Selective Service Act?

by  |  earlier

I've recently turned 18, and I am still not very clear on what the Selective Service Act is. I heard that I am supposed to receive a letter asking me to enroll on the list. So far it's been almost 2 months and I have yet to receive any letters regarding it.

I am not a U.S. citizen, however I am a permanent resident. Am I supposed to sign up even though I'm not a U.S. citizen?

Also, what are the rules, deadlines, and punishments? Basically pros and cons.

Thank you for reading! 10 points to the most informative answer :)

  1. If you're not a citizen I don't think you fall under the selective service act.  Even so, you don't need a letter in order to register.

The basic concept is that we can't really expect non-citizens to fight for our country.

  3. i don't think you'll get that letter. if you do want to get citizenship then you can get that by serving in the armed forces. it will also open up a lot of doors to pay for school and give you experience and a trade you can later use in life. good luck with whatever you decide.

  4. You ARE required. citizen or non-citizen alike.

Under the Military Selective Service Act, all young men (citizens and non-citizens) between ages 18 through 25 are required to register with Selective Service.

Failure to register is a felony and subjects the offender to potential serious penalties and the the loss of significant benefits such as: federal and many state and local jobs, student financial aid, federal job training programs, eligibility for US Citizenship, etc.

Registration can be accomplished at any US Post Office or on the internet at www.sss.gov. You can also verify registration on the SSS Homepage.

  5. You probably won't get a letter due to not being a US citizen.

  6. The selective Service Act is A draft. Like how the US drafted to get the man power up in the Military for World War 1 and 2. Basically all it is is an act set up in the event that the US has another draft. It doesn't mean that you have to join the military.  If you are not a US citizen then it does not apply to you, but if you decide to join the Military Don't join the Army. The easiest branches are the Navy and Air force.
