Selena Piek, Iris Tabeling emerge as Women’s Doubles champion - Belgian International Update
Women’s Doubles partners Selena Piek and Iris Tabeling remained invincible in the final round of the Yonex Belgian International as they thrashed Johanna Goliszewski-Judith Meulendijks on September 16, 2012.
This hard fought tussle, which lasted for 33 minutes, was one of the best encounters of this International Challenge as both contenders had to sweat hard to read final result of 24-22 and 21-18.
They made the spectators gasp with their breath-taking performance in two games and their laudable effort was applauded by the crowd.
Johanna and Judith, who belong to Germany and Netherlands respectively, walked tall despite facing a straight-set defeat.
Though, the scratch pair was dazzled in both segments of the showdown but still they registered their mark by showing great fighting skills.
In first set of the match, they started in perfect manner but a fluctuated performance jeopardised their stakes.
On the other hand, Selena and Iris showed superior finishing skills and swept the table with a tight yet favourable margin.
They played with a cautious approach which resulted in 7-7 but they managed to end the first half of the set with a respectable score of 11.
After one-minute interval, Johanna and Judith put an extra effort and regained their status with 15-12 total.
Both female shuttlers ruled the court until the third quarter of the set but a couple of fatal mistakes brought them down.
The Dutch campaigners did not squander this opportunity and saved the honour with an impressive knock of 24-22.
Next game, which turned into the decider later, was also played in the same manner as both teams put all they had to achieve their respective goals.
The twosome of Selena and Iris was looking to finish this tussle in just two games while the opposing team was striving hard to avoid a straight-set defeat.
Johanna and Judith played with the right attitude and fortitude but luck was not on their side and they lost the trophy with a three-point deficit.
Meanwhile, Selena and Iris proved themselves late bloomers as they were trailing behind until 14-17 but few uninterrupted rallies helped them to claim the crown with a final result of 21-18.
