Selena Piek and Iris Tabeling nail Women’s Doubles title at Estonian International 2012
Nederland’s talented female players, Selena Piek and Iris Tabeling, make their mark as they have nailed Women’s Doubles title after defeating the lower ranked team-mates, Samantha Barning and Ilse Vaessen, in the final contest of Estonian International 2012,
in Estonia, on Sunday, January 15.
The World Number 44 Selena and Iris, who were the top seeds in the Women’s Doubles draw of the tournament, had to struggle hard to get rid of their un-seeded but spirited compatriots.
The top seeds had to dig deep into their arsenal to bring out better form to beat their rivals. They took 45 minutes to overcome their team-mates in a mouth-watering rubber-set contest.
Selena and Iris played authoritative badminton and took advantage in the match by winning the first set.
However, in the following game, Samantha and Ilse put up stunning performance and levelled the contest by winning it. But Selena and Iris controlled the game in the final set and won it easily.
The starting game was interesting in the opening rallies when both pairs matched the pace of rallies.
Nevertheless, Selena and Iris took over the control from their rivals and started to dictate the pace. They remained ahead in the whole set and ended it with a decent margin of 21-15.
In the following game, Samantha and Ilse surprised their higher ranked compatriots by playing flawless badminton. They kept the tempo of rallies fast and worked well at net area to put pressure on their challengers.
Selena and Iris could not cope up with the aggressive strategy of their lower ranked opponents and lost the second game with a stunning 13-21 score on the board.
In the final set, Selena and Iris did not drop their speed and kept the pace of rallies high. They put pressure on their opponents by executing powerful smashes and net killings and remained in complete control in the whole game.
The positive play of Selena and Iris helped them to bag the deciding set with a fabulous 21-10 score on the board.
The ending score of this 45-minute Women’s Doubles title match was 21-15, 13-21 and 21-10.
