Selene Stakes at Woodbine reels in a competitive field as Inglorious makes her return to Woodbine’s Poly Track
After a great summer at Woodbine, 3-year-old filly Inglorious looks to make a comeback to a track where she feels at home a month after her 6th place finish in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga.
The Grade 3 $250,000 Selene Stakes at Woodbine on 25 September will be the Hennessy filly’s next target, competing against 5 other 3-year-old fillies, over a distance of 1 1/16 miles, at Woodbine’s Poly Track.
The Josie Carroll trained Inglorious was declared as the favourite to win the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes on 20 August, 2011, considering her brilliant summer at Woodbine, where she won 3 of 3 in as many starts including the Queen’s Plate over Poly Track on 26
June.
She ran three races at Woodbine prior to the Alabama Stakes, with distances ranging from 1 1/16, 1 1/8 miles to 1 ¼ miles, all on synthetic surface. However, at Saratoga she had to prove herself on dirt.
Our of Noble Strike by Smart Strike, Inglorious wilted and was never a factor in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes, run over the same distance as the Queen’s Plate, 1 ¼ miles, but on dirt.
In the Grade 3 Serene Stakes, Inglorious is back on Woodbine’s Poly Track, teaming up once again with the leading Woodbine rider, Luis Contreras.
Inglorious has a stellar record at Woodbine, with 5 wins in as many starts, and she will be looking to maintain her perfect record in her 6th start.
The Donver Stables owned filly will break from post number 3, carrying 117 pounds, accompanied by another Robert Smithen’s filly, Anne’s Beauty, also returning to Poly Track after she nailed the one mile Grade 3 Ontario Colleen Stakes on grass on 27 August.
The rest of the field will consist of the Graham Motion trained Dynamic Holiday, who was also at Saratoga, coming off a third place finish in the Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes while Josie Carroll’s second entrant besides Inglorious would be Achieving.
Smart Sting and Ms. Silver Oak will complete the line-up for the Grade 3 Selene Stakes on 25 September.
