  1. Traditional custodians restrict what you can invest your retirement funds in. They don't allow you to invest in real estate for example.

A self directed ira custodian allows you to invest in non-traditional assets. You can invest in real estate, tax liens and private mortgages and much, much more.

  2. You can hold  (what are called) non-traditional assets within an IRA.  Some of the self directed IRA custodians out there are just custodians, which are banks.  Others are considered IRA administrators that work with banks.

The way to be able to invest in non-traditional assets is to open a self-directed IRA account with either a custodian or an administrator.  There are a number of different companies out there.  Just search for self directed IRA under google or yahoo.

We have a great page on our web site that explains self-directed IRAs and the type of investments that you can make.  It's located at http://www.theentrustgroup.com/benefits/...

I work for a self-directed IRA administrator.  A self-directed IRA custodian is typically in one location so that if you are on the west coast, you have to call two time zones away.  As an IRA administrator, we have local offices across the U.S..  That way, if you have a good investment that you'd like to make with your IRA funds, and you need it done quickly, you can call your local office.  It's great, especially if you get a hot lead on a good deal for an investment.

We have a complete learning center on the site.  It's located at http://www.theentrustgroup.com.

Hope this helps.  Email me if you have any questions.
