  1. I can second what conrod says. My FiL and I built our conservatory on a base that a builder put down to our specs.

It was the first and only one we did and it took us 4 days to assemble. It would have taken us 3 days if we hadn't made a cockup on the first day - we got some of the panels out by a few mm.

The base can be done a number of ways. Personally I would suggest building the outer wall out of block work then laying a concrete floor inside in the normal way, so you would need to allow the correct depth for insulation, concrete slab, screed etc. When doing a floor I always start with the insulation on a level surface of earth or compacted hardcore binded over, which doubles as a protector for the damp proof membrane. It saves having to bind the sub base too much.

I always pour the concrete on top of the membrane.

I would lay the concrete before you build the conservatory but lay the final screed after. That way you can lay the screed at the level that's right for you rather than having to do it around a sill and frame that isn't there yet.

  2. I have been installing conservatories for years, and from my personal view it is well worth you trying it your self.

If you are (and it seems that you are) a competant person as far as construction is involved, then feel free to save yourself a fortune in getting it done by a professional.

I will check on y/a daily and if you get any problems. email me and i will guide you. I have my own company and one of our motos is , "Make sure the customer is not short changed".

If you want further advice, email me.

    Best of luck.

  3. Like conrad I have been fitting conservator's for 20 years or more and would say that any competent builder or DIYer can save money by Installing their own conservatory. However I would recommend spending a little more on the product, Ultraframe have a nice system with good instructions and they put it all together in their factory to make sure it fits perfectly and all the correct parts are sent. I have had a few calls to sort out DIY disasters in the past and have found the biggest problems with Wicks conervatorys. One last point is go with a polycarbonate roof If It's an Edwardian or Victorian, you will find this much easier than a glass roof
