  1. just bring a tazer or a gun, criminals nowadays are well trained too, or they just shoot you behind your back. criminals attacking women by grabbing, only happens on movies, people are gonna' get raped or robbed whether your alive or dead (it's sick but it's true). so you're best defense will probably being ALERT about your surroundings and who you're with and don't loiter after midnight (nothing good ever happens after midnight) and don't trust anybody you just met. predators are incognito all the time and your friend's mom's paranoia is justified especially nowadays. (self defence classes is time consuming and not always effective coz' you might know what to do but when you get hit, panic will ensue or you're ko'd coz' to apply self defence, you have to contact, and defense are always in a disadvantage unlike offense because they are prepared to attack you with anything they have and you have to anticipate they're actions,  so be ALERT and dont let yourself be vulnerable) you don't have to be a black belt to protect yourself. peace!!!! ☺

  2. If you are just looking for self defense as in women's self defense. You can try your local YMCA or a local college. They often have a course designed just for women's self defense that is reasonable. Some school offer this too. The ones in the colleges and junior colleges are usually taught by an instructor from one of your local martial arts schools. Some of those students decide they want to learn more martial arts and later join that instructors school.

  3. I would recommend a Judo class because you won't be as likely to  bruise your pretty faces.

  4. Check with your YWCA/YMCA, city recreation program, or even local community colleges or adult education programs.  If that doesn't work, then some martial arts schools do run special self-defense programs.  Or you could all take up a martial art together.  Despite what some people say, style is not as important as the instructor.

  5. I'm not real keen on the typical women's self-defense courses. All the "No! Stop! Hands off!" stuff is pretty wrong headed. The Fast Defense program or Model Mugging are okay with the Bullet Man training and training of gross motor skill self defense, but they're stuck in the "Kick him in the crotch!" mentality. The good part of these though is putting you into high stress situations so you learn to cope with adrenaline.

Anything that trains you to deal with this sort of adrenaline response is good, but make sure that you're not training in something that's been turned into a sport (or being taught as a sport)... Sports imply rules. In defending yourself, you should not have any limits.

If you guys are pretty active, I'd suggest a fighting method like Krav Maga, or, if a class is available, Phil Legarre's Shinken Taijutsu is a great, streamlined version of Taijutsu that trains you to fight in stressful situations and disengage when safe. Since it's not well known, you can find a link to his site below.

    Be safe and train well.

  6. This won't hurt, and will do wonders for your conditioning.

Not sure how old you are but....there are many "non-lethal" weapons out there for adults.

    Tasers, pepper spray, personal alarms.....ect.

    P.S.-Moms know best!!!!   LoL

  7. Well, a good place to take it would  be a Tae kwondo studio or Karate, martial arts studio. All are very good choices and are GREAT in self defense. I would recommend researching a little bit on self defense and close studios. Thanks to you to. :)

  8. Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Krav Maga, etc. are all great disciplines for pure self defense.  Look for a school in your area.

  9. anywhere would be fine if youre just trying to appease a mother.

  10. karate?

  11. Overall, for women's self defense, I'd choose Jujitsu.

You'll learn how to defend against bigger, stronger opponents. Using balance, momentum, leverage, and human anatomy. That is a definite advantage.

There's Primarily Stand-up styles of jujitsu (which I recommend).

and theres Brazilian/Gracie Jiujitsu (BJJ).  BJJ is good for ground fighting, it looks similar to wrestling, so it's very good defense against rape but is lacking in multiple attack scenarios and fighting while standing up.

But concentrate on standup styles because virtually any self-defense situation will begin while you're standing.

Jujitsu is fun, practical, you'll get a great total body workout, and after ever class you'll feel like you've learned something to better defend yourself.

In the Ring, Jujitsu (BJJ) is a primary component of UFC/MMA

As a traditional art, (Japanese) jujitsu was the empty handed art of the samurai.

Jujitsu( usually under the label of modern or "goshin") is also used by the law enforcement and military.

  12. just find a martial arts class near you which you can all afford. most places have free trial classes just go to some trials and find one you all like and then sign up there.
