  1. Once again here comes the BJJ people out of the woodwork. Hello BJJ... is a martial Art and he is specificly asking for something that is not a Martial Art, and how do you know there is even a school in his area that teaches it?

BJJ is a great style no doubt, but if we listen to all the posers and wannabe's and UFC fans it is the cure for everything but it is not. I would like to see somebody that only knows BJJ if attacked by 3 people. Or by one really determined person with a knife. Let's have a woman who if she is attacked 99% of the time will be for sexual assault do half her attackers work for her and take it to the ground. SELF DEFENSE IS NOT FIGHTING IN A RING, WHY CAN'T PEOPLE GET THAT THROUGH THEIR HEADS?

As for your question I know of no self defense system that is not considered a martial art. Boxing, Krav Maga, Reality based self defense are considered martial arts. I really cannot give you an answer without more information. Is it just certian types of martial arts you don't want? Also exactly what is available in your area?

  2. Go to your local Citizen's Academy put on by your local Law Enforcement agency.

Pretty much everywhere, there is something of this sort that is put on by your local Sheriff's office or Police Department. A lot of what they cover is the awareness needed to avoid bad places, and situations.

Then contact the N.R.A. (National Riflemen's Association) and see what kind of shooting courses or conceal and carry classes they offer in your area. Chances are if you go to a local gun show you will find plenty of classes offered, or people willing to give you private lessons.

If you live in a conceal and carry state, then go through the course requirements, and get your license. That combined with proper instruction on shooting, and stress or reactionary shooting, will all greatly help.

Make it a habit to carry pepper spray, and/or a personal alarm, something that draws a ton of attention.

Self Defense to me isn't about unnarmed techniques. If I feel in fear for my life, my reaction doesn't come from eye gouges, or ancient chinese secrets, it comes from a 9mm hydroshock round travelling at 1000 fps. (That's about 682 mph). So my point is there are tons of things you can do to help prepare you self defense wise other than Martial Arts.

A lot of it is really easily at your disposal, you just have to look.

  3. 1) watch the videos by bas rutten on self defence.

    2) go work your punches on a heavy bag, learn how to hit.

    3) watch the videos on youtube called "how to fight"

    4) carry around a roll of quarters to reinforce your fist. it will knock someone out and it takes away the worry of breaking your hand. when someone attacks, pull it out of your pocket and hold it in your fist.

    5) get some other weapon, like a steel batton.

  4. People with and without Martial Art training defend themselves all the time.  Self Defense is simply defending yourself.  Any Martial Artist will normally be better equipped to successfully defend themselves than someone with no training at all.

  5. All good martial arts classes teach self-defense.  For example, at my first Tae Kwon Do lesson I learnt a class takedown that can be used to defend a glass bottle attack to the head etc.

  6. I believe in self defense training. I believe it needs to be vigorous and intense to work. I don't think you can learn it from a book or the Internet. I believe videos and books can be a supplement to a good instructor.

A good martial arts school should be devoted to self defense or the should change their name to sport center.

I believe there are several really good arts that are suitable for self defense.

I believe I have answered this question al least a dozen times.

If you don't want to learn a martial art to defend yourself than stay away from dangerous situations. Learn to run like the wind. Have 911 on speed dial.

  7. yes if u find the right art yeas... some would be crav ma gaa or karate.. they are great to learn how to defend ur self

  8. learn some ju jitsu, brazillian ju jitsu preferably expesially if your smaller or a girl, its very effective for smaller people, big people too but i have seen some little people good a jj tear some big people up

  9. For real self defense training, your body and brain need to be taught to react to dangerous situations in a controlled manner.  The only way to do this is to practice with a partner under a good instructor - reading a book or watching a Youtube video is in no way going to help you in a practical self-defense situation.  Since you don't want to study martial arts, my advice is:

    1) Situational awareness is key - assaults do not usually take place in a group setting or public place.  Stay with someone, stay aware of your surroundings, and keep your valuables and cash out of sight.

    2) If you are attacked - SCREAM.  BITE.  KICK GENITALS.  POKE EYES.  and RUN!   Make noise and get near people - that's the best self defense for a non-trained person.

Also, many Police Departments wil offer self-defense classes very cheaply or free- ask a police officer or call the local Police Department.

    Good luck!

  10. krav maga is technically not amartial art and is specifically designed 2 deal with street violence.

  11. krav maga

    kajukenbo

    look it up

  12. I believe that Tao J has the best answer for this question.

  13. First, just to correct a quick misconception: Krav Maga is a fighting method, not a martial art. It's often confused, which is okay, but should be understood for what it is.

Yes, I know that self-defense works. I also know that martial arts training can work, or can hurt you without good training.

Self-defense is doing -whatever- it takes to survive a dangerous encounter. The key to defending yourself should be to run away as soon as you safely can. Do not engage attackers if you're not prepared mentally and physically to deal with the repercussions.

Do something like parkour that you can practice without a trainer. The reason I suggest this is because you'll learn to efficiently escape, putting obstacles between you and a pursuer. This won't be effective 100% of the time, of course (being cornered in an alley for example), but will put some ability into your arsenal for escape. If an attacker is swinging a knife, defend with the back of your forearms (you're going to get cut, but want to minimize damage). Unarmed, use your body weight to slam past (even 100 lbs. can be quite a strike) and use the opening it offers to get away. Play tackle football with your buddies to practice how to take someone when you slam into them.

Another good distraction is to throw coins at an attacker as you move past. Quick distractions are opportunities, nothing more. Use them to escape.

If you end up getting into a scrape, nothing is off limits. Anything you think of as "dirty" is exactly what you should do. And, again, the second you can safely escape, do so.

  14. Try kickBoxing that's what i'm durning and i love it this can help you defend your self But !!!! if you are afread to hit a prsn in fool streinght i segjest to run away if your being atacked
