Question:

Self learning to get a job?

I am currently 26 years old and cannot afford to go to school if my life depended on it. I have always wanted to work in the physics/mathematics field and I have been self learning math and physics books for years now. Would it be possible that if I study hard enough and enough training myself that I would be able to get a job in the science/math fields, with no degree to back it up?

  1. No, for a decent paying job, usually you need a degree. Just get to college. If you're not eligible for F-Aid apply for loans and take classes in a community college and/or online. It'll take you a few years. If you study part time alone it'll take you about twice but you'll be doing what you love in the long run. Obviously you gotta pay off the loans afterwards.

  2. County colleges have very cheap classes and you can take one at night while you are working.

You can also take college courses on line.

  3. Look into some of the things you'd like to work with, and see where it's happening.  See if there's something you are qualified to do that's useful to them.  I started as a volunteer lab assistant at a local university.  Be honest about your interests and capabilities.  If you start by helping a team in some way, you can see what things you need to learn and work on those.  If you show yourself useful, your help may be welcomed.  Perhaps you can build or maintain equipment or experimental apparatus.  You can likely find rewarding work within your capabilities.
