Question:

Self propelled lawn mower rear right wheel will not propel and it locks when i pull mower backward?

after some research i've seen terms like woodruff key... have looked at both rear wheels to see if i can figure out why one works and the other doesn't. any suggestions?

"Gear trouble" is kind of like saying "family problems".  A broad term that doesn't specify very much.  Your drive wheels are on either a splined or keyed (very likely a woodruff key) shaft.  The splines or key are likely worn to where the wheel won't drive but still have enough hold to keep it from freewheeling.  If you are handy you can remove the wheel yourself and locate the problem or take it to a repair shop.  And no, it shouldn't be too expensive.
